Biographical / Historical

Many volunteers donated their time and talents to secure a public path especially the 14 founders: Mrs. Watts, Helen Turner, Lillian Lasch, Elizabeth and Samuel Holmes, Phoebe and George Ryerson, Jane and August Sindt, Dr. Warren Keck, Bill and Betty Nemec, John Heddens and advisor Gunnar Peterson of Openlands. They organized a board, developed an organization, developed communications, recruited members and volunteers, conducted an intensive grass roots campaign to rally public support for a public path, and met with local, county, state and national government officials. The responsibilities of the Board of Directors of the Illinois Prairie Path have changed over time. From 1966 through 1986 the board was responsible for advocating, building, expanding, maintaining and funding path improvements along 27 miles of the Path in DuPage County. Since 1986, government entities have responsible for maintaining and improving the Path in DuPage County. From its inception in 1970 in Kane County and in 1979 in Cook County, government entities have had the same responsibilities. The mission of the Board in all three counties now is to preserve, enhance and advocate on behalf of the Illinois Prairie Path for current and future generations. The board is responsible for annual cleanups, annual meetings, memberships, communications, volunteer work days, permits, trail displays and coordinating memorial bench donations.

Processing Information

During archival processing, two copies of the minutes for many meetings were kept: a clean, original version and Jean Mooring's copy, upon which she suggested corrections to the official minutes. Both copies were kept since it was unclear which version was designated the 'official' minutes.
