Biographical / Historical

The Evangelical Theological Seminary (ETS) was incorporated in 1873 as the Union Biblical Institute and classes began soon after. ETS was long associated with North Central College by proximity and religious affiliation. Until its purchase of property in 1908, ETS rented rooms in the College’s Old Main building as classroom space for its students. In 1968, a merger of the Evangelical United Brethren Church and the Methodist Episcopal Church formed the United Methodist Church, resulting in two seminaries in the Chicago area. In 1974, ETS merged with Garrett Theological Seminary and relocated to Evanston. The College purchased the former ETS property in 1976.
