Scope and Contents

This collection consists of two bound volumes which are transcriptions of the proceedings of each conference, compiled by the Lecture Recording Service in Chicago, Illinois. The transcripts include every lecture as well as the subsequent question and answer session. The first volume from the 1937 conference includes 28 lectures that cover various topics relating to tensions in Europe and Asia, including titles such as, “Tensions in the Orient,” “The Fascist Threat to World Peace,” and “If War Should Come.” The second volume from the 1938 conference includes 32 lectures on similar topics, varying from the life of Jewish people in Europe to increased calls for peace. Titles from the second conference include, “Can We Be Neutral?” or “Ethical Powers and Non-Violence.” There are no known original audio or video recordings.

Biographical / Historical

The Midwest Institute of International Relations met in June in the years 1937 and 1938 at North Central College. The first conference of this organization met in 1931. This annual conference was begun to discuss the issues concerning war and intolerance on the international front. The sponsors of the conference included the American Friends Service committee and the Congregational Council for Social Action. Contributors and speakers included heads of Christian organizations, diplomats, college faculty and presidents, as well as travelers who have been to Europe and Asia. The conferences held at North Central College in 1937 and 1938 were presided over by President E.E. Rall. The Lecture Reporting Service recorded each lecture with a transcriber present.
