NCC: Arlo L. Schilling papers

 Collection
Identifier: NCCA-C113

Scope and Contents

The papers within this collection are mostly carbon copies of correspondence received and sent by President Arlo Schilling from 1960 to 1975. The bulk of the files cover 1960 to 1973, but a few files in the collection date from as early as 1929, reflecting that the issue discussed in the file was an ongoing one and that President Schilling and his staff found the previous correspondence useful in the matter. Topics in the collection include the Black Student Association, Project Phoenix, the building of the Science Center, the merger of the Evangelical United Brethren Church to form the United Methodist Church, various organizations of higher education, the dissolution of the Bachelor’s of Music degree, speeches used by President Schilling, and campus activities.

Biographical / Historical

Arlo L. Schilling, a native of Indiana, served as assistant superintendent of the Elkhart Indiana City Schools before he came to North Central College as President on July 1, 1960. Schilling served as President of North Central College from 1960 through 1975. Schilling’s presidency oversaw the turbulent social changes of the 1960s, the construction of various buildings on campus, and the revamping of the college curriculum through Project Phoenix. As President of North Central College, Schilling became heavily involved in several organizations of higher education, including as President of the Federation of Independent Illinois Colleges and Universities and Chairman of the Associated Colleges of Illinois. In July 1973, Gael Swing was appointed as Executive Vice-President and, at that point, President Schilling turned over much of the internal operation of the college to Swing, who succeeded him as President. Following his resignation in 1975, Schilling became a member of the Board of Trustees of North Central College and remained connected with the college in this capacity until his death in 2000.
