Scope and Contents

This collection, which includes documents from 1913 to 1946, contains mostly financial correspondence between President Rall and individuals and groups concerning monetary donations to the College. A small amount of materials pre-date Rall’s administration, but were presumably used for reference or as part of an ongoing program. The majority of this series consists of correspondence with G. A. and Henry and Annie Merner Pfeiffer. Largely, the letters are solicitations from President Rall for donations, their responses, and appreciations for their gifts. Topics include specific and general scholarship funds, funds for college buildings, and shares of stock given to North Central. Personal correspondence between President Rall and the Pfeiffers includes holiday greetings, family histories, book exchanges, and thank you notes for gifts. Additional financial development correspondence in this series include the Forward Movement program of the Evangelical Association, the Diamond Jubilee fundraising campaign, an endowment fundraising program, the purchase of Heatherton Estate/Goodwin property, the construction of Kaufman Hall, and a donation by Kroehler Manufacturing Company.

This collection also contains reports created for various assessment bodies. The University of Illinois served as an assessment body for state higher educational institutions, as indicated by these reviews. Copies of the reports submitted by the College to the American Association of Collegiate Registrars and to the North Central Association provide many statistics about the College’s enrollment and finances.

Biographical / Historical

Edward Everett Rall was president of North Central College from 1916 to 1946. President Rall, a native of Iowa, received his education from the Iowa State Teachers’ College, the University of Iowa, and his Ph. D. from Yale University. At the time of his appointment to then North-Western College, President Rall was head of the English Department at University of Tennessee. President Rall’s 30-year tenure (the longest in the history of the College) oversaw times of growth and expansion of North Central, reflected in the growing campus, more extensive course offerings, and increased recognition from accreditation agencies, as well as times of crises in the U.S., including both World Wars and the Great Depression.
