Biographical / Historical
The Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA) was created in 1873 after Robert Weidensall, Secretary of the International Committee of the YMCA, came to North Central College (then called North-Western College) and organized a student chapter on campus. The Young Women’s Christian Association (YWCA), originally called the Young Ladies’ Christian Association, was organized by a professor, Mrs. Nancy Cunningham Knickerbocker, in 1875. The purpose of the YMCA and YWCA was to promote the growth of religious life in everyday life through daily prayer, support for missions, and Bible classes.
