Identifier: NCCA-C002

Scope and Contents

This collection contains programs, itineraries, newsletters, guidebooks, prospectuses, flyers, and brochures relating to the music department at North Central College. Subjects include tours of the Men’s Glee Club, Concert Choir, and Women’s Chorale, workshops in opera and church music, an early history of the School of Music, the Music Festival and the Fine Arts Festival, and the madrigal choir. The collection also contains programs from the Evangelical Theological Seminary’s choir concerts. A portion of the folders are organized chronologically with various date spans. The folder’s that date 1879-1899 include tickets and invitations as well. This series should not be considered a complete record of all the musical events.

Biographical / Historical

North Central College’s rich heritage in music dates back nearly to its earliest beginnings at Plainfield, Illinois. Beginning in 1862 with the arrival of Professor H. C. Smith, the College has offered instruction in vocal music. By 1900, music education was offered through the college’s School of Music and continued expansion resulted in the offering of the Bachelor of Music degree in 1926. By 1963 all music degrees were awarded by the Department of Music. During a financial crisis in 1970, two music degrees (Bachelor of Music and Bachelor of Music Education) were dropped, although the Bachelor of Arts degree in Music continued with two faculty members. Since this nadir, the College returned to solid footing and the Music program grew. In the early 1990s, new faculty was recruited and a music education major was reinstated. The college’s long tradition of vocal ensembles has included men’s and women’s glee clubs, madrigal singers, Oratorio Association, continuing today with the Concert Choir, Chorale, Cardinal Chorus, and Chamber Singers.

Physical Characteristics and Technical Requirements

Within the collection one folder, 1927-1931, contains a set of programs which were glued to pages later removed from a scrapbook. Due to the physical condition these were maintained in a separate folder and filed as close as possible to the chronological order.

Processing Information

As accessioned, this collection of the music department files included oversized posters, and a box of binders with flyers and programs in chronological order. The collection of flyers and programs was missing several years between binders which were apparently transferred to the archives previously as they were found in the base collection from 1999. The two groups of programs were merged to complete the collection and perhaps restored to its original chronological order.
