Scope and Contents

This collection largely consists of programs/playbills for individual plays, dating from the origins of Summer Place Theatre in 1967 through the 2000s, although currently none from 2002-2006 or after 2007. The playbills generally contain the production information including title, directors and producers, cast members, staff, and advertisements from sponsors. In this series is a 20-year anniversary booklet from 1986 that appears to have been distributed as part of a planned reunion. In addition, there is correspondence amongst North Central officials and construction plans.

Biographical / Historical

The Summer Place Theatre was founded in 1967 by North Central College Professor Donald T. Shanower and Donald Jamison ’36, a charter member of the Naperville Community Theatre. Summer Place operated out of several community and College locations. This included a vacant automobile showroom at Sixth Avenue and Washington Street, a tent-covered tennis court on the Fort Hill Campus, a more permanent pavilion atop the College’s old tennis courts, and finally Napervillle Central High School. Summer Place Theatre continues to serve as Naperville’s community theatre. Immediate Source of Acquisition

This series was created primarily from two donations of material from private individuals, both received in 2009. A subsequent transfer of records came from within North Central College with correspondence and construction plans.
