Scope and Contents

From the Series:

Congressman Fawell wrote Columns of the Week designed for weekly publication in the local newspapers while Congress was in session. The columns were either faxed or mailed from the Washington D.C. office to the editors of the local newspapers within the 13th Congressional District. Through these columns, Congressman Fawell explained and discussed issues before Congress that would be of interest to his constituents. Presumably these were written in conjunction with the legislative staff member whose name appears as the contact person in his office. Congressman Fawell wrote on topics that reflected his interests in Congress and include, but are not limited to, labor, budget, governmental reform, abandoned babies, science, immigration, and taxes. These files include two chronological runs of material. The first run is the unpublished version of the Columns of the Week which were on pre-printed letterhead containing the Washington D.C. and District offices contact information. The files include a chronological list of topics covered which was created by the office staff for each year between 1985 and 1998 (except 1995, for which no list exists). For two years, 1996 and 1997, an additional index that lists the subjects alphabetically followed by the column date is included. Two columns are missing from the unpublished collection, March 5 and March 12, 1990. The second chronological run consists of photocopies of Columns of the Week, as printed in local newspapers.
