Scope and Contents
One of the largest jobs for a Congressional office staff is responding to contact from constituents. Constituents who wrote, called, or e-mailed to communicate their positions on various issues or request information most often received a reply from Congressman Fawell's staff in the form of a written letter. In some instances, the District office replied to correspondence sent directly to that office rather than forwarding it to the Washington, D.C. office for response. Topics included vary from thank you notes for arranging tours, recognition of local constituents, and support or opposition to specific bills or issues. The District office staff maintained correspondence from constituents in annual files. The original letters sent to the District office were stapled to a copy of the letter sent in response and, in many cases, the drafts of the response. The final folder of the series on Congressman Fawell's retirement was the only file maintained on a specific topic.
