SC022 Your College Newspaper
Scope and Contents
The Your College Newspaper collection, running from January-April of an undated year, were a series of largely satirical publications by and for Shimer students. Although they contained weekly calendars with information about campus events, most of the newspaper was more zine-like, with handwritten jokes and headlines cut from various magazines, as well as occasional poetry and drawings done by Shimer students.

Biographical / Historical
Your College Newspaper was published for both entertainment and informative purposes, as it contained a weekly calendar with campus events alongside more satirical and literary material done by Shimer students.
Although it is unknown what year Your College Newspaper was published, it was likely published in the 1970s or after, when leadership of the college was less strict. This is apparent due to the newspaper’s explicit nature and social satire. Such publications would likely not have been allowed under previous college leadership, particularly President F.J. Mullin, who served from 1966-1967 and was accused of a dictatorial leadership style until his resignation.
Another clue on the possible time frame these newspapers were published is their technical simplicity. Your College Newspaper was not as professionally published as some other Shimer publications, and was instead printed on ordinary printer paper, which is suggestive of a time when the school was undergoing financial distress, likely in years either right before the spring 1979 move to Mt. Carroll, Illinois, or afterward.
