SC020 Acropolis Yearbooks
Scope and Contents
The Acropolis yearbook collection, running from 1960-1962, includes photographs of Shimer students and faculty engaging with one another around campus. These photographs were often captioned with various literary quotes, and were followed by individual pictures and names of Shimer faculty and students. Each Acropolis included at the end a directory with names and addresses of students and alumni. The 1960 Acropolis was unique among the others. Rather than including quotes from previously written literary works, it included an imaginary dialogue between Socrates and the character of a Shimer student.

Biographical / Historical
Largely funded by patrons, the Acropolis was a yearbook published by Shimer students. When the Acropolis was published, Shimer was still located in its original campus in Mt. Carroll, Illinois. At this point in its history, it had adopted the Great Books curriculum that would become its hallmark. Each edition of the Acropolis was dedicated to a different figure, often a professor, who had made a significant contribution to the Shimer community. Respectively, the editions of the Acropolis were dedicated to A. Beth Hostetter, John M. Hirschfield, and David W. Weiser.
