SC016 Shimer College Bulletins
Scope and Contents
The Shimer College Bulletin includes news about events happening at the college as well as about the achievements, marriages, and deaths of alumni. The bulletins reflected Shimer’s growing financial struggles, with a heavy focus on fundraising rather than campus news from the 1980s onward. It also reflected strained relations with alumni, due to how much the college’s identity had shifted from a strict girls’ finishing school to a liberal, coeducational environment.

Biographical / Historical
Running from 1975 to 1994, the Shimer College Bulletin was published from two separate campuses. Through the Autumn 1976 issue of the bulletin Shimer was still located in Mt. Carroll, Illinois. However, all subsequent bulletins were published from Shimer’s campus in Waukegan, Illinois. It was primarily written by faculty and students, with some submissions from alumni. The bulletin experienced significant changes after the move to Waukegan. By then, it was substantially shorter and consistently printed on thinner, cheaper paper, a trend that began in the Autumn 1976 bulletin due to the growing financial struggles of the college.
