Meant to celebrate and promote a liberal arts style of education, the 1997 edition of the Shimer Roundtable contained poetry, prose, and academic writing. The Roundtable was published toward the end of Shimer’s stay on its Waukegan campus, as the school would move to Chicago in 2006. By the time of the Roundtable’s publication, the school had established itself as unique, due to its Great Books program and its small, discussion-style classes. This is something that is heavily advertised in the Roundtable.
The Roundtable was edited by Albert Bades Fernandez, a humanities professor at the college. Meant to advertise and promote the liberal arts style of education, the Roundtable accepted submissions by a variety of authors who were somehow affiliated with the liberal arts. Some of these people were also affiliated with the college itself, such as alumnus and poet Peter Cooley and Shimer’s then-dean, David Shiner.
