One specific topic makes up the bulk of the Federal portion of this series. The National Trail Designation was an important recognition from the United States Department of the Interior first achieved by the IPP in 1971. The files include the IPP's application for this status, data collection and correspondence in support of this, and correspondence and news clippings about the designation. The State and Regional Planning Trail Planning files pertain to open space and trail plans throughout the State of Illinois as well as the Northeastern Illinois region. The Northeastern Illinois Planning Commission files pertain to open space planning for the entire region and contain correspondence, publications, press releases, and reports to this effort. Correspondence and proposals about various other state and regional trail plans, such as State Bikeway Plan and Illinois State Trail Plan are included here as well.
