Scope and Contents

This series consists of Rev. Gamertsfelder’s personal papers. The correspondence includes letters, programs, and invitations both received and sent by Rev. Gamertsfelder. Two folders contain notebooks of lecture notes and examination questions from the courses that Rev. Gamertsfelder taught at Evangelical Theological Seminary. A bulk of this series consists of Rev. Gamertsfelder’s sermons which are largely undated, but could date from either his time as a parish pastor or with the Seminary. One folder of the sermons is in handwritten German. Also included is a history compiled by Professor Emeritus of Religion William Naumann of the Gamertsfelder family written in 2006.

Biographical / Historical

Solomon J. Gamertsfelder graduated from then North-Western College in 1871 and began a career in ministry. He served fourteen years a parish pastor in his home state of Ohio, and was also the Assistant Editor of The Evangelical Messenger, the national newspaper for the Evangelical Association. Rev. Gamertsfelder came to the Union Biblical Institute in 1895 and remained there until his retirement in 1923. In 1912, following the Institute’s name change to the Evangelical Theological Seminary, the position of President was created (superseding an absentee bishop role of Principal) and Rev. Gamertsfelder was named the first President. The Gamertsfelder family connection with the College and Seminary continued as his children and grandchildren attended either or both institutions. The College now owns the Gamertsfelder family home and uses it for faculty offices.
