Biographical / Historical
Station WNCC began broadcasting from North Central College in 1947 using a “ham-radio” and was operated by the Amateur Radio Association with help from the Speech Department. In 1954, the station became a member of the Intercollegiate Broadcasting System and changed its call letters from WNCC to WNOC. On June 28, 1968, WNOC went FM and became Station WONC, with a listening radius of 25 miles.

The base collection of the College Archives had no inherent order. The Archives created this series out of the base collection in 1999. Files received from Mike Quintero, a former student at WONC, were added to the original collection in 2002. Brandon Herman ‘20 digitized audio cassettes that were labeled “WONC’s cassette archives” in 2017 for an audio documentary on WONC. The audio cassettes contained shows, newscasts, and excerpts of shows from 1972-1982.
