This collection contains brochures, newspaper articles, correspondence, fliers, meeting minutes, agendas, and notes saved by Tholin as he advocated for fair housing and peace and justice.

Biographical / Historical
Reverend Richard Tholin completed his bachelor’s degree in from North Central College in 1949, and a bachelor of divinity degree from the Evangelical Theological Seminary (ETS) in 1952. Tholin went on to receive his doctorate degree in theology from Union Theological Seminary. In 1963, he returned to ETS to teach, serving as assistant professor of church and society and director of field education. Tholin continued serving in seminary education when ETS merged to become Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary (GETS). He served as dean and vice president for academic affairs during the final seven years of his career at GETS, retiring in 1993.
Tholin married his North Central classmate Phyllis Eckardt ’49. Together, with their daughters, they donated a new collection, Tholin Chicagoana to Oesterle Library in 2004. Tholin Chicagoana contains over 2500 volumes focusing on different aspects of Chicago and its history.
Tholin was recognized as a leader in the United Methodist Church and was a community activist.

Processing Information
Folders titles and organizational content of folders was retained from creator, Reverend Richard Tholin, when apparent. For preservation purposes, newspaper clippings were removed and stored in separate oversized folders with titles mirroring the folders they were in originally.
