NCC: Mildred Rebstock papers
Scope and Contents
This collection contains photographs, newspaper clippings, science survey reports, a scrapbook, letters, a high school diploma, offprints, Dr. Rebstock’s master’s thesis and doctoral thesis, awards, patent documents, and a funeral program. Artifacts, housed and inventoried separately include artwork, a chemistry scale, a wooden box with scale weights, two graduated cylinders, a gown worn by Dr. Rebstock at the National Press Club Awards, and a 250M bottle of chloromycetin.

Biographical / Historical
Dr. Mildred Rebstock was born on November 29, 1919 and raised in Elkhart, Indiana. She attended North Central College for her undergraduate degree and graduated in 1942. Dr. Rebstock also attended the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where she earned a masters degree in 1943 and a PhD in 1945. Upon her graduation, Dr. Rebstock worked for Parke-Davis Research Labs in Detroit, Michigan from 1945 to 1977. In 1947 she led a team that discovered how to synthesize chloromycetin, an antibiotic. In 1949 her team published their work and Dr. Rebstock became widely known and recognized for her contribution to the field of synthetic antibiotics. She retired in 1977 and died in Ann Arbor, Michigan on February 17, 2011.
