State of Illinois Vote Certification, 1984
Scope and Contents
Congressman Fawell first sought election as the Representative of Illinois' 13th Congressional District in 1984. The voters elected Fawell to six subsequent terms of Congress (1986, 1988, 1990, 1992, 1994, and 1996). Congressman Fawell declared his intention to retire from public office in 1997, and therefore, did not campaign during the 1998 elections. The 13th Congressional District elected Republican Judy Biggert as its Representative in 1998. According to federal campaign laws, election files must be separate from office files, and staff and support for a campaign cannot be within a taxpayer-supported office. Therefore, although these files were received from the District office, they were kept at a separate off-site location. The majority of these files consist of general election materials such as fliers, pamphlets, door knob cards, support cards, petition forms, newsletters, and endorsement information. Also included are correspondence, invitations, background information, press releases, and election results. When appropriate, more specific categories are arranged alphabetically within each year. These categories include fundraisers, Congressional Club events, information about the opponent, paid advertisement, and other specific events.
